The Tactical Mindset: Teaching Children How to Evaluate Positions

Young chess beginners often have a natural urge to move the very first piece that catches their eye! While spontaneity is full of energy, developing a thoughtful tactical mindset means learning to pause and evaluate the position before touching a piece.

At Chessadda, we teach our junior players a super friendly 3-step routine called the C.P.T. Checklist to help them evaluate any board position with calm clarity.

The C.P.T. Checklist for Young Thinkers

Before making a move, we encourage kids to quickly scan the board for three things:

1. **C - Checks**: *"Is there a safe way for me to check the enemy King?"* 2. **P - Protect & Captures**: *"Are any of my opponent's pieces undefended, and are all my own pieces protected?"* 3. **T - Threats**: *"What sneaky idea is my opponent planning for their next turn?"*

Why This Checklist Works Wonders

This simple three-step routine transforms impulsive habits into deliberate, thoughtful decision-making. Kids stop making accidental blunders and start discovering clever tactical combinations on their own!
